Honorable Mention Heat M. Kathryn Black When the heat comes I’m unprepared. I have too many blankets and parades pass by playing jittery Puerto Rican salsa. It drips over sides onto hot tortilla streets. I’m hungry for peppered Mexican food. I want to sweat like a bath in mid-summer, bake until the chill in my bones has melted to the temperature of magma, till I say ouch. Only then let me lie in dew-lapped fields where I can watch the late robins spring from worm to grasshopper. I will be so still that one will hop on my brow, write a poem.
